DYSKINESIA MANAGEMENT

Paroxysmal Non-Kinesiogenic Dyskinesia

  • Clonazepam

Paroxysmal Exertion Induced Dyskinesia

  • Tegretol

Paroxysmal Hypnogogic Dyskinesia

  • Tegretol

Paroxysmal Kinesiogenic Dyskinesia

  • Tegretol
  • Dilantin
  • Acetazolamide (may be combined with tegretol)

Tardive Dyskinesia

Do not use trihexyphenidyl

Use GABA agonists:

  • Clonazepam
  • Keppra
  • Gabapentin

Dopaminergic agents

  • Amantadine

Alpha agonists

  • Clonidine  

0.1 mg po bid starting dose, OR 0.1 mg a day transdermal weekly patch

Remember to taper, danger of rebound hypertension when stopping.

Slowly taper off the offending neuroleptic if possible

Taper off any Anticholinergics

Neuroprotective agents such as Vitamin E may be added.
